Caught on Camera

A recent news item in The Daily Telegraph told of a 19 year old burglar who was brought to justice after his activities were captured on a camera connected to a cost effective computer. What made this report particularily interesting was the fact that the computer he had stolen wasnít recovered until after his arrest.

Using a 'redundant' PC running at least an 800MHz processor with 128Mb of Ram - obviously the more the better, a pair of hard drives and three or four relatively inexpensive cameras, you only need add a plug-in PCI video capture card and you have a sophisticated digital surveylance system to protect you and your own.

Many of the capture cards available have an audio input in addition to motion detection facilities. Not only can you record sounds made during a burglary which may provide valuable evidence but you can concentrate and record areas of the image where no movement would normally be expected. The system can be programmed to sound an audible alarm, display an on-screen message, trigger an external alarm or even send you a text or email message or view live images via a web browser or a video enabled mobile phone.
